Ned Schwing stated in his reference book to the Design 1890 & 1906 that Winchester began evidence marking them in 1908… I do not know if that may be precise, but will suppose that it's. The “WP” proof mark was used once the barrel and receiver ended up mated, assembled and finished. This is extremely obvious about the firearms created during the late teens as a result of early 30s when the blue flaked (popped) off once the evidence was struck within the receiver body.
